The Writing Program would like to congratulate Anne Fitzsimmons, Syracuse University's first recipient of the Meredith Recognition Award for an adjunct or part-time instructor. The Meredith Recognition Award provides the recipient an expense account of $3,000 for professional development for one year. Among the goals of this program are to tangibly recognize excellence in teaching and to stimulate the development of a culture of mentoring among faculty members. The Meredith Recognition Award criterion for selection is excellence as a teacher. The selection committee included the three faculty members from the Meredith Symposium, the senior Meredith professor (chair), two undergraduates and one graduate student. The committee considered evidence of teaching innovation, effectiveness in communicating with students, and the lasting value of the courses. Anne was nominated for this award by Rebecca Moore Howard (Writing Program Director) and Margaret Himley (Writing Program Director of Undergraduate Studies), saying that she "succeeds so brilliantly as a classroom teacher, curriculum designer, mentor for new teaching assistants, and leader in the Writing Program. "She works with a sophisticated, experienced, nuanced understanding of teaching and learning--and she does so with the humor and light touch and grace that comes from having that deep understanding. She enjoys herself, as do her students. She challenges herself as much as she challenges them." |
