Karen Oakes Named First Recipient of The PWI Excellence in Teaching Award

The Writing Program is delighted to announce that Karen Oakes is the first recipient of the Professional Writing Instructor Excellence in Teaching Award. The Selection Committee unanimously agreed that Karen's teaching materials represented exemplary interpretations of the lower-division curriculum. Her materials for working with service-learning classes identify her as a program leader in this area.

Undergraduate Director, Margaret Himley describes Karen's submitted teaching materials: "Terrific syllabi and assignments, a real sense of
how to put the learning goals to work—along with service learning . . . . they are quite inspiring."

There will be a formal presentation of the award during the Fall Teaching Conference on Thursday, August 24th. Karen's WRT 105 and 209 materials are available below (MS Word format):

Writing Program Director, Carol Lipson, would also like to thank all the PWIs who applied for the award and encourages them to consider applying again in 2008. Thanks also go to the Selection Committee who read all the materials: Margaret Himley, Betsy Hogan, David Kim, Faith Plvan, Eileen Schell, and Nancy Wright. .

PWI EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD

The PWI Excellence in Teaching Award is a biennial award that recognizes exemplary interpretations of the lower or upper division curriculum. Award recipients may request a $1000 research stipend or the cash equivalent.

All Writing Program PWIs are eligible to apply for the award. Applicants should submit syllabi and course materials; a letter of application; and two letters of recommendation from Syracuse University undergraduates to the Selection Committee by June 1.

The Selection Committee is appointed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies and will consist of one full-time faculty member; one member of the teaching staff; two PWIs (one with primarily lower division experience and one with primarily upper division experience); and one upper division Syracuse University undergraduate. PWIs serving on the committee will receive a $75 research stipend and undergraduates will receive a $25 SU Bookstore certificate.
