Steve Thorley Receives PWI Excellence in Teaching Award

The Writing Program is happy to announce that Steve Thorley has been selected as the biennial winner of PWI Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is given out every other year in honor of a PWI; the award "recognizes exemplary interpretations of the lower or upper division curriculum."

Thorley's materials and student letters indicate a creative teacher who engages students deeply in their reading and writing assignments in both the lower-division and upper-division studios.  The award selection committee was particularly impressed with his well crafted assignments, engaged classroom persona, and attention to students' development as thinkers and participants in civic life.

Steve's teaching materials are available below, and his achievements as a teacher also will be recognized at the Writing Program's Fall Conference on Thursday, August 21st.

The Writing Program also thanks the award selection committee:  Steve Parks, Faith Plvan, Betsy Hogan, Molly Voorheis, and Roxanne Bocyck, an undergraduate Writing major.

PWI EXCELLENCE IN
TEACHING AWARD

The PWI Excellence in Teaching Award is a biennial award that recognizes exemplary interpretations of the lower or upper division curriculum. Award recipients may request a $1000 research stipend or the cash equivalent.

All Writing Program PWIs are eligible to apply for the award. Applicants should submit syllabi and course materials; a letter of application; and two letters of recommendation from Syracuse University undergraduates to the Selection Committee by June 1.

The Selection Committee is appointed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies and will consist of one full-time faculty member; one member of the teaching staff; two PWIs (one with primarily lower division experience and one with primarily upper division experience); and one upper division Syracuse University undergraduate. PWIs serving on the committee will receive a $75 research stipend and undergraduates will receive a $25 SU Bookstore certificate.

The Selection Committee meets during the summer to read application materials and forwards its recommendation to the Writing Program Director. The award winner will be announced at the Fall Teaching Conference.
