The Globalization Reading Group kicks off the spring session this Monday, February 10, at 4:00 p.m. in the HBC 239 lounge. All are welcome.

For this meeting, please bring ideas for what you'd like to read. We'll discuss how often we'll meet and what we'll read for those meetings. Two themes have been mentioned for us to pursue: continuing with the gender and globalization issues we started last semester and doing some reading on environmental issues and globalization (guided by none other than the intrepid Kerryn Higgs!). Damian Baca has recommended a wonderful book to read called Vanishing Voices, which examines language extinction across the globe due to economic and social upheaval (globalization). The writer (an anthropologist) argues for biolinguistic diversity. There is a recommendation that we read part or all of this book.

If you are interested in the group but can't attend the first meeting, please send an e-mail with your interest and any suggestions to Chris Geyer (cageyer@syr.edu).
