Margaret Himley Awarded the Excellence in Graduate Education Faculty Recognition Award

The Writing Program is pleased to announce that Margaret Himley has been awarded the Excellence in Graduate Education Faculty Recognition Award by the Graduate School at Syracuse University.

The Excellence in Graduate Education Faculty Recognition Award honors faculty members whose dedication to graduate students and commitment to excellence in graduate mentoring have made a significant contribution to graduate education at Syracuse University. Award recipients were recognized along with the Outstanding TAs at a April 7 event presided over by the Dean of the Graduate School and other University officers.

Writing Program Director Eileen Schell's supporting letter, details Himley's contributions: "In addition to her effective teaching, Margaret is known for her ability to mentor and inspire graduate students. I have had a chance to observe her mentoring first-hand as I have served on many graduate student exam committees and dissertations with her. I have found Margaret to be a dedicated and imaginative graduate advisor and mentor—the kind that we all wish we could have had in graduate school. She has the ability to hear what graduate students are saying about their projects, and she always helps them move forward on that work in a respectful, yet challenging way. Margaret has the gift of being able to ask what I call the 'crucial question'—a question that strikes at the very 'heart of the matter' of a graduate student’s seminar paper, exam areas, or dissertation research."

Composition and Cultural Rhetoric students Jen Wingard, Gale Coskan-Johnson, Kelly Concannon-Manisse, and Elisa Norris nominated Himley; excerpts from their letter illuminate their appreciation for her teaching and mentoring:

"Professor Himley defines what it means to be curious about the world, to be interested in ideas, and to be committed to scholarship in action. As a former student in her course about methodological practices and through our continued work together on the Writing Program’s Diversity Committee, I have seen Professor Himley model what professionalism and collegiality is."

"Her support created space in which my convictions and imagination could be translated into action. Professor Margaret Himley provides a delicate balance between collaboration, nurturance, active engagement, and criticism. Her work and presence continues to inspire me, and many of my colleagues, to develop a firm stance in the academy as well as beyond."

"I am most grateful for is her skill as a scholarly mentor. She provides a supportive environment for research, because she listens, she cares, and she has very high standards."
